Jazz in Kidderminster is fortunate to have a football club and a director who also is a Jazz Fan.

With the blessing of the Board of Directors.Trad Bands of good quality are booked here twice each month.
The room is ideal and very well furbished with a small stage in the middle and a bar serving drinks and meals at the one end. I visit quite often and it has a nice friendly atmosphere.
Parking is no problem and the area is well lit.

A little celebration for a well known Midland Jazz Man.
Trevor Emney.

Trevor has now been playing for some fifty six years and is still going strong.
In the past few months I have been to a number of his gigs and have always found it a pleasure to hear him.
His presentation brings a smile and I am sure the guys with him enjoy being part of his group.
B' ham born Trevor Emeny has been at the front of the Midlands jazz scene for over 50 years, and has the rare honour of playing Ronnie Scotts London. He has worked world wide on cruise ships, and a four year spell in Australia gave him the chance of working with many stars, including Tony Bennett and Sarah Vaughan. He has worked for, and with, Royalty both here and abroad. He celebrates 56 years since taking up the saxophone with the release of a current C.D. "Ballads and Beats"
Long may he continue bringing jazz to us all.

 The Old Fashioned Love Band
at
The Aggborough
I have not visited Aggbrough for some time and I could find no better reason to do so than a gig with the Old Fashioned Love Band. Upon arriving early it was good to see the room well filled and, Alan Biggs the promoter assured me this was very much due to the band in question.
I have always enjoyed this band. Their leader, the well known jazz presenter on Radio Stoke/Shropshire, is the ideal man to present the band. From the start we noted the fine rhythm section getting under way and giving the front line a real lift, with
Dave Timmis drums Harry Forelius bass and Jake Reeves banjo & guitar.
The front line of Mel trumpet Mike Pembroke trombone and Mike Turner clarinet, soprano,& alto. was a pleasure to hear with some fine solos from each man.
Vocals were spread throughout the programme, and Jake has quite a distinct and unusual voice.
It was great fun to have Dave, raconteur and drummer, telling all sorts of stories throughout the evening.
Mel is seventy today 31st Jan 06 and I wish him well and long may he continue to lead this fine band.
Do pay a visit if they are in your area, you will not regret it

Jazz at The Aggborough

John Everett's Red Dragon Jazzmen with Ruth Frith

It is some considerable time since it was our pleasure to see and hear John Everett's Red Dragons and' once again it was Alan Biggs who gave us that opportunity.
The directors' suite at the Aggborough is indeed a venue comfortable, warm and welcoming.
The band made a fine start with That's a Plenty and my first impression was what a quality of sound with the whole band so well balanced through their sound system, and so it was to be throughout the evening. (Much credit to Ruth Frith's husband ) The standard of playing was good and John has some really fine musicians to compliment his very own style of playing. This evening he had two last minute guests, a great friend of his Alan Bailey on clarinet and alto sax and on banjo Ian Dalziel. Ruth joined the band towards the end of the first set and produced some very fine jazz offerings and the audience enjoyed every moment. A rather unusual offering by the band was King Olivers, Chimes Blues, played in the authentic style. One of the last numbers which Ruth sang was Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave To Me and what a great performance she gave, even with the progression of a sore throat!
Fine support from the rhythm section throughout which gave the front line a real lift.
This will be the last time for a little while that John will be fronting the band as he has been advised to take a rest. The band, of course, will still play on and John has arranged for a very good deputy to take his place.
We all wish him well and look forward to his early return
Many thanks to the band and Ruth for a great evenings Trad Jazz,we shall look forward to a return visit
Thanks also to Alan Biggs for keeping jazz alive

 Paul Munnery & Harlem

I was not at all familar with this band, but reports were good, that a trip to Kidderminster was the order of the day. What a nice surprise we had! Here was an eleven piece band, well presented in white Tuxedos, and ready to play at the appointed hour.
Paul has formed his band in the style of the twentys and thirtys and the arrangements and playing were as near to this era as possible. It soon became obvious that this was a well rehearsed band and everyone was reading their music.
I am really not well versed in the bands of this day, but one of my friends, who was with me, had a very good knowledge of this music, and assured me that this band really was a credit to style played in those days.
I would urge you not to miss this band if they are visiting your area, it was such a good evening of jazz (and I am a mainstream man)

Note to Paul. Please bring your banjo player into the band, she is much too good to leave on the side, and better looking than you lot anyway.

The Heart of England Jazz Band
20th Oct. Selwyn Newton, clarinet. Pete Ainge, trumpet. Derek Halford, trombone.Clive Milward, drums.
Roger Heath, bass. Dave Smith, banjo..

We had looked forward to this evening for some time as the guest of the Band was John Crocker, better known as a long standing member of Chris Barber's band. John, throughout these years, has always been a delight to listen to and, as expected, we were not to be disappointed this evening. The Heart of England has some fine musicians so John had no difficulty in presenting his own style of playing with clarinet, alto and tenor sax. I think the front line of Selwyn, Pete and Derek  were very much at their best which is often the case in bands when the guest is a professional musician. It just gives that extra lift.
The band, of course, is well known to us and we often see them, their presentation in person and programme of music is a pleasure to see and hear. I just wish a few more trad bands would follow their example.
Alan Biggs is the promoter of the Aggborough jazz evenings and the programme up to Christmas is excellent. Please support him and, as John Crocker said before the final number, "We need you if jazz is to survive" Many thanks for a great evening to John the Band and Alan. What was that final number? Bourbon Street or something ! and John forgot to bring his music? :-))
