John and Marie have promoted Jazz at the Harp twice each week for many years now, and they really have made a great success by doing so. The Harp is well on the jazz map.
The Lounge bar is given over to this music and there even is a special area for the bands to set up and play.
It has a great atmosphere but if you want a seat you are well advised to turn up early.
Most gigs are in the Trad /New Orleans style, but mainstream musicians also appear from time to time plus some local big bands although it does get a little crowded then.
John and Marie work very hard indeed to make the events a success and they deserve your support to keep jazz alive.

Rachel Pennell

Rachael Pennell with the Roger Heeley Trio treated us to a very enjoyable and extremely professional session.
Not our usually Tuesday evening fare but none the worse for that. Backed by Roger on piano, John O'Connor on bass guitar and Roy Dutton on drums Rachael delivered a varied mix of songs including "I Can't Get Started" - "Mean to Me" - "I've Got Rhythm" & "Lady and the Tramp".
A nice change was her "Autumn Leaves" partly in French, to give a continental atmosphere to the proceedings.
The highlight of the night, for me, was when Rachael silenced the entire (usually noisy) bar with an exquisite rendition of "Hushabye Mountain"
Only the very best can do that at The Harp!!

Thank You John & Marie for a great evening.

The Jazz Gentlemen

They gave a us a great evening of mixed jazz, Ellington one minute WC Handy the next.
The reed man, Terry Porter, just recovering from a serious illness and sitting for much of the first set, was outstanding. He shone on Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Soprano Sax and even did a beautiful, show stopping, solo on Flute.
The trombone player, Terry Brunt was as irrepressible as ever (we've seen him previously with The Manchester Jazz Band) his playing and his 'on stage' antics light up the proceedings. His finale, where he moves amongst the audience as he plays, was really something.
The trumpeter, Derek Skepper, was a very fine player and the rhythm section of Maurice Gavan (piano), Keith Allcock (bass) and Dick Nancarron (drums) gave excellent support all through the session.

If they come again, don't miss the chance to listen to this fine North Western band.

 Neville Dickie at The Harp
with Nick Millward
drums

We are regular visitors to the Harp and on this occasion decided to arrive a little earlier than usual which means about 30mins before start time. On entering the lounge we could not believe our eyes as every available space, sitting and standing was truly filled !!!
I know John and Marie were delighted and the sale of the football competi'tion and the draw just took off.
We managed to find a spot for when Neville started but I am sorry to say after half an hour we repaired to the bar and had to leave.
We enjoyed what we had heard but before I left requested my good friend Frank Meeson take a few notes and the result is as follows

Jazz Club 90 at The Harp, Albrighton, provided another great night on Tuesday 17 January 2006. Recognised world jazz great Neville Dickie gave a fine display of stride and boogie woogie piano to a packed and enthusiastic audience. Backing Neville with clever, exciting drum work and occasional vocals, was the Kenny Ball percussion star Nick Millward. A very classy evening of piano jazz!

It is always a pleasure to go to a gig of Bryan Jones and, as this takes place once a month, we look forward to a good evenings big band music.
Following my request over these past few months to have Carole Westwood as a guest. Bryan, who knows a good thing when he hears one, soon got out pen and paper and wrote arrangements for her and the band. The result was that a
great evenings entertainment.
Carole, who sings mainly with her own trio, was quite at home with the band and the arrangements Bryan had written. These were a great credit to him and put Carole at ease with the band in full flow.
Arrangements were also written for a quartet with Bryan on piano,
Roy Sainsbury guitar. Brian Ford drums and
Mike Keagan bass guitar.
The audience were delighted with the result.I am sure Carole will be back at a later date. In the meantime the Christmas gig will be on Tuesday 20th December

Do come and join us and enjoy

Warners Jazz Week End

 Bodelwydden Castle Jazz Festival

My good Friend Frank Meeson has sent me a few details of another great week end at Bodelwydden Castle. I really must visit myself as he advises this is great jazz in a wonderful, situation

Report on the Bodelwyddan Castle hotel Jazz Festival which took place 9th to 12th march 2007.

The Denise Lawrence Band

The festival started on a high note with a three set session on the Friday evening from Richard Leach's 7 Stars of Jazz: Richard (trombone) Ged Stone (trumpet) Chris Pearce (reeds) Mike Graver (piano) Brian Mellor (Guitar & Banjo) Roger Davies (bass) and Roy Dutton (drums). Great stuff from Richard and the boys, high standard as always.

Saturday afternoon was a welcome return of the pride of North Wales - Jazzrag Dixieland Jazz Band. This was a great band with an exciting and driving lead trumpet from Stan Williams.
Saturday evening began with an hour or so with the Denise Lawrence Band starring that fine reed man John Hallam. Denise hosts these festivals and brings many very good bands to entertain the throng.

The main attraction Saturday night was one of Europe's most entertaining and professional bands...The Chicago Teddybears Society Jazz Band. The energy given to the band by their driving trumpet lead makes everyone want to leap up and dance (no mean feat considering the age of most of us).

Sunday there was a fabulous and varied lunchtime's entertainment of jazz, blues and gospel music from Denise Lawrence's band.

The evening session was from The Yorkshire Stompers and the proceedings were wound up with a final hour from Denise.

Good Music, good company, comfortable accommodation and enjoyable food. Add to this copious quantities of good wine and paradise is ours

Frank Meeson.

All this for around £200. What a bargin !

Funds for jazz

John & Marie held a fund raising event at the Shifnal Cricket club again on the 5th December. I was unable to attend, but John tells me it was a great success and raised over £160.00 on the night. This is really a great credit to them both, and their helpers.
The work they put in to keep jazz on the scene in the Telford area is never ending, for without them Telford is a jazz wilderness!
Part of their success was due to one of the best Trad bands around having been booked for the event,
The Heart of England Jazz Band, and below I show the lads working very hard for that evening.

March 16th     It was my pleasure to visit The Harp this night with the Heart of England on the stand. Two hours of really fine trad jazz! A planned programme well played and presented. Each man can solo so well that I will not mention names. The rhythm section well led by Clive, and driving hard at times must be a treat for the guys who are playing in front. I know I am getting old, and do repeat myself, but do go to see and hear them when they are near you. Thanks to John and Marie they will be back.

The Bryan Jones Big Band.

Comment Tuesday 16th December.
This was the last concert of the year, and I am sure Bryan and the band were delighted with such a large audience for this evening. The quality of playing was such that the band really responded to this support. For the first set Bryan worked them very hard, and the trumpet and trombones excelled, infact they only just had time to turn their music. As expected the reeds always provide a good sound and each gave us some good solos. The second set produced some well known numbers again and Roy Sainsbury, guitar, always gives such a nice balance to the music with his solo work. I must mention the fine support given throughout the evening by the rhythm section which, of course, includes Bryan himself.
As I had hoped Bryan then brought Arthur Brown to the front to form a trio to play a little trad jazz. Their Sweet Georgia Brown and Basin St. sounded just great, and put the final stamp on a good evening.
May I wish Bryan and the band A Happy New Year and thank them all for keeping big band jazz alive and well in Shropshire. But remember please bring a friend, we need your support to keep them playing

 Comment May 20th
What a treat we had on this evening of fine Big Band Jazz, this is the third time it has been my pleasure to hear them in as many months and they never disappoint.
Bryan, as many know, has been presenting his band for many years and it dismays me, as with many other fine jazz musicians, that they never get the recognition they deserve.
With his many fine arrangements of well known standards, and musicians who can respond to the tasks he sets them, a good evening is assured.
It is nice to note that the audience is well able to appreciate every note and responds with the usual enthusaism of good jazz folk.
An unexpected guest was Trevor Emney, tenor. What fine solos he gave us along with Roy Johnson, tenor. Mention must be made of John Saunders fine trumpet solo early in the evening ,along with some great playing by Kay Macintosh, trumpet. As always the boss on keyboard was most enjoyable and Roy Sainsbury, who arrived late after some 250 miles, still played us a very nice guitar solo. That's dedication for you!
Finally Arthur Brown and the lads gave us a little Trad music and it was a nice touch for the finish of a most enjoyable evening.
Sorry if you missed it but I will promote this band as much as I can.
