San Climent Casino

The Casino reopened last year after a complete rebuild.
Despite the name it's not a casino, but a Bar/Resturant with very good well-priced food. If you want an authentic atmosphere then eat in the bar with the locals.
They also have a very nice restaurant that has a slightly more extensive menu.

The service is very good and so it is well worth a visit

On Tuesday nights they have the famous jazz club. It is a great venue and visiting musicians (some quite famous) sit in with the resident band.

 The Jazz Club

Every Tuesday as from the 20th May 2008 at 9-30 pm

Lou Deach is leader of the resident band and during the closed season has written many new arrangements. Since January Lou has been rehearsing the band so this will make for a more professional approach to the music.
This season they are going to use different rhythms with their music eg Afro-Cuban, Latin American and some Funky style music, plus mainstream jazz. This will keep the scene fresh and interesting.

A report from Lou re last season 2007 and the formation of a Big Band !

Last season was really excellent with the band playing lots of new arrangements ( courtesy of yours truly ). There was a different feel to the band as I was playing Soprano Saxophone as well as Tenor, it made for a more interesting sound than just 2 Tenors.
It's amazing how many people, who have not been before, find their way to the Casino. It was very gratifying the number of people who told Valerie what a great time they had and how much they enjoyed the music.

The members of the band are still the same and we have been rehearsing, for the last 5 months, the new numbers for this season. Carles will be playing Alto Saxophone as well as Tenor, so with the Soprano as well it will add a new dimension to the band.

I have also formed a Big Band ( 5 saxophones, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and 4 rhythm) called the Menorca Swing Band. The members of this band are Menorcas' finest musicians. I had a fabulous season with this band, with gigs in many towns in the country including the Fiesta at San Clement and in the winter we did a tour of the island.

This band plays the music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Phil Collins, Blues Brothers, Elton John etc a complete musical mixture. I have been sent some scores for them by some of Americas top arrangers. I am really looking forward to this season with the Swing Band. I hope when you come over you will get a chance to hear us.

The line of the band this year is: Rhythm section: Pablo on piano
Nestor on bass guitar
Adriano on drums
Front line: Carles on Tenor Saxophone
Lou on Tenor & Soprano Saxophones

As always visiting musicians will be welcome so bring you instrument with you. Vocalists also welcome.
We will look forward to our next visit

The San Climent Jazz Club
A past visit

As a family we, have been visiting this Island for over 30years but cannot remember when we first began visiting the club.
However we do remember Les Emmett on piano who, along with Bob Samuells (Roberto) I believe started the club. For quite a few years now we have never missed a visit and it still always amazes the talent which arrives to perform with really very little planning.
I have placed this page on my web site, as I am sure there are a number of musicians who may well go to this lovely Island for their holidays, and I would urge them to visit and, of course take their instrument with them. As for jazz fans then this is a must to visit but, I would mention, the main content is mainstream jazz.
In opening this page I am at a slight disadvantage not being a resident but I hope after a short time I will get enough fed back to remain up todate.

During the summer months the club meets every Tuesday at 9 30 pm and eats and drinks are always available at the The Casino San Climent. The finish time is around 12.30am.
This year there have been quite a few changes in the resident band and a fine, very enthusiastic jazz musician by the name of Lou Deach, tenor sax, now leads the group. The group is made up of Lou and Carles saxes, Adriano drums.Nestor bass guitar and with Bob on bongos as and when. I know they hope to have a new pianist in the near future as this has always been very much part of the group. With many visiting musicians this spot can often be filled.
We attended the nights of the 22nd and 29th July and only left at the final number. I did not take notes so will just give impressions. The first being the fine playing of Lou's tenor and his great feeling for jazz, which rubs off on all those around him and the audience as well. On the first evening things started a little slowly and then they played All Blue and from that, there was no looking back and the lads were working so very well together with many good solos.
We then moved to the second half by which time Bob had a few names to work with. I regret I can not remember them all but one for me proved quite outstanding. Lou had called up a local guest drummer John Newman? and things were going very well, then he pointed to a guy near by and in effect said get up here. This guy played bongos and how! It was going well before he moved on to the stage but all I can say his playing set the place alight. He knew just what was going on and complimented all the guys around him to great effect. We were so pleased that Bob kept him on for some time and when Dannilo gave us a very fine solo he worked so well throughout that number with him.

It was good to see the return of Jurgen Bucholz (trumpet & flugel horn),who I had not seen for at least two years and a friend of his to accompany with the guitar. A nice duo but also then joined in with the band. The stage by this time was getting a little full but the music and the atmosphere was great. It was well gone 12.30am before we left. Our second visit could not equal the first but that is how it is at the club. However we still had another treat instore.
It was an harmonica player Toni? who played the blues and with all the guys on the stand responding ,with Lou giving a delightful solo it made the evening. But that was not all as towards the end Bob presented us with an alto player and it was quite obvious that this guy was no amateur from the moment he reached the stage, and this was proved to be the case with the two very fine numbers he played.
This is how it is and I know of no other club where this happens. Do go there and we will hope to be there again on our next visit also. Many thanks to Bob, Lou and the lads for keeping jazz alive in Menorca.

July

It's that time of year again and, once more, it was our pleasure to visit the club. I just wish we could get the audience at our local club that Bob, Lou and the boys enjoy.
As always Bob produced guests out of thin air and a very fine pianist from Croatia was one musician early on the stage, and I am sure most welcome by the band. (As to date they do not have a regular guy) For the unusual however, Bob introduced Jim from Ireland to play an instrument the likes of which we have never seen. It was on a large board with strings not unlike a piano and, Jim played it with both hands but not as a guitar, the result was most interesting, as he was very much master of the instrument. I hope I may see him in this country sometime. This is what makes the club so special.
Much to my surprise another bongo player came on the stand and, along with a visiting drummer, Gareth from Scotland, really got things underway. Then a very young lady vocalist produced a nice song indeed and, not having written it down, I cannot remember the name, but I hope she will appear there again.
Lou, as ever playing so well and directing with so much enthusiasm.
If you are a Jazz Fan please do not miss it. It is a great evening out.
